Internet Safety

Internet safety isn't about the right software or service. Rather, real safety in the digital world is all about active, involved, loving parenting.  It's a team effort that builds a strong Christian family!

In an effort to support this you, we are providing information and suggestions that may help guide you and your family in implementing both safety rules and software tools to protect them online. Focus on the positives of Internet use while teaching children about the dangers and how to make wise choices online.

Some basics:

  • Talk to your family about the importance of staying safe online and the need to have an Internet safety plan.
Teach your children how to use the Internet safely.
  • Look at where the computer is placed in the home. If it is in a bedroom, move it to a public area of the house where it will be easier for you to supervise.
  • Make sure you have safety software installed on the computer. This may include a filter and other security software such as anti-virus programs. Your Internet Service Provider or computer retailers will be able to help you out with what to get and how to install it properly.
  • Discuss with your children the benefits and risks of going online and reassure them that you are there to help if they get in trouble.
  • With your children, sign an Internet Safety Contract and set up house rules for use of the Internet.
  • Supervise and monitor the use of the Internet with your family. Address issues quickly and know where to report problems. Do not give out personal information or interact with people they do not know.
  • Encourage and support your family with their use of the Internet. Teach them to make the right decisions and increase the levels of responsibility as children get older.
